Description
This device is used to investigate the relationship between pressure and temperature of saturated steam in equilibrium with water in a certain pressure range.
If energy is added to water, increasing the activity of molecules causes some of them to leave the surface of the liquid and this process continues until the equilibrium state is reached. This balance depends on the pressure of the pure substance (steam) in the vicinity of water. The lower the pressure, the easier the molecules leave the surface of the liquid and the less energy they need to reach the equilibrium (boiling point).
The temperature at which the equilibrium occurs, for a certain pressure, is called the saturation temperature.
