In any machine that deals with liquid, cavitation may occur whenever the static pressure at a location becomes lower than the vapor pressure. In the case of cavitation, the liquid can suddenly turn into steam on the spot, and the original order of the steam cavity is created and disrupts the role of the flow. The vapor cavity changes the effective shape of the flow channel. Since the size and shape of the vapor cavity is affected by the local pressure field, the flow can become unstable. Instability can cause the entire current to oscillate and the machine to vibrate. With the start of cavitation, the performance of the pump or turbine decreases rapidly.
